BFAR rescued two Dolphins in Cam. Sur. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Regional Office No. 5 thru its Fisheries Regional Emergency Stranding Responding Team (BFAR5-FIRST) with the assistance of local officials and residents successfully rescued two stranded dolphins in the coastal barangays of Camarines Sur. The Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus) (left photos) was seen stranded by Mr. Luis Beran, Ragay Gulf Bicolside IFARMC Chairman in Brgy. Binahian, Sipocot, Camarines Sur on January 20, 2012 and was immediately released back to the wild. Based from the gathered morphometric data, the said dolphin is approximately 500 kgs. and surmised pregnant. A week after, an adult female Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) (right photos) was spotted stranded along the estuary of Brgy. Dolo, San Jose, Camarines Sur by two fisherfolk namely Mr. Ernie Payong and Jaime Payong at around 7 a.m. on January 27, 2012. The said fisherfolk immediately reported the incident to Brgy. Captain Juan Olbara. The barangay officials along with the fisherfolk released the dolphin in the wild at 3 p.m. According to BFAR5 FIRST Team Leader Nonie Enolva (in blue shirt of left photos), marine mammals strand because they are injured, sick, starving or lost. There are already 3 recorded dolphins and 1 whale shark stranding occurrences in Bicol Region this month of January 2012. The BFAR5 – FIRST Team responders are Nonie Enolva, Provincial Fisheries Officer Santiago Noblefranca, Noel Umbao, Catherine Elan and Rey Raña. kathilotin/cgbatan |
