A Mindanao-based agribusiness firm - the Alson Consolidated Resources and the provincial government of Sarangani Province recently has donated some 6-million bangus fry to the government as some kind of assistance to small fish farmers in Batangas and Pangasinan that were hardest hit by the recent fish kills.
Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala and BFAR national director Atty. Asis Perez received the bangus fry from Alson Consolidated Resources President and Chairman Tomas Alcantara, Sarangani Governor Miguel Domiguez and Finfish Hatchery President Alex Alcantara in simple cermonies held at the BFAR Central Office in Quezon City.
The bangus fry, which came from the Alcantara Finfish Hatcheries in Malapatan, Sarangani Province will be distributed later to the affected fish pen and fish cage owners in Talisay, Laurel, San Nicolas and Agoncillo all in Batangas and Anda and Bolinao in Pangasinan.
The Department of Agriculture through BFAR has transported the fry to the BFAR's National Brackishwater Fisheries Technology Center in Pagbilao, Quezon for nursery where they will be nurtured to fingerling size after which they will be distributed to the fish kill affected farmers.
Alcala said the donation will give a big boost to the affected fish pen and fish cage owners, all of whom suffered staggering losses due to the fish kill.
